About the Book
The aim of this textbook is to present, in a lucid way, and explain a portion of Physical Chemistry.
The first part constitutes extensive discussions on classical thermodynamics and its applications.
After introducing certain important concepts and simple mathematical tools essential to handle
the subject the four fundamental laws have been discussed in detail with illustration. Potential
applications of classical thermodynamics have been discussed that includes chemical equilibrium,
ionic equilibrium and phase equilibrium.
In the second part, we have discussed the classical electrochemistry briefly which covers mainly
the conductance and related phenomenon and also the thermodynamics of electrochemical cells.
Application of thermodynamics in redox reactions such as Nernst equation and its extensive uses
have been covered in this chapters.
A good number of illustrative tools, like tables, plots, figures and diagrams have been incorporated
to substantiate the theoretical issues and to make the visualization easier. We feel that this will
enhance the ease of grasping the subject. One of the important features of this book is the special
stress on the physical interpretation, without compromising the depth and mathematical rigor. The
book contains an extensive collection of objective, subjective and numerical problems. Hints and
solutions are given whenever required. It also embeds a substantial number of Multiple-Choice
Questions (MCQs) which are relevant in the context of recent entrance examinations. More
importantly, solutions to questions from the past years in the pertaining to the question papers
from several universities (CU, VU, WBSU) and competitive examinations [JAM (2022-2005), NET
(2020-2010), GATE (2020-2000) etc.] have also been provided along with.
This book certainly covers the syllabi of all Indian universities as well as major competitive
examinations. This book has been presented in such a way that if a serious student goes through
this book in an orderly manner, he or she will be able to solve the exercises by himself/herself and
will certainly develop a firm conceptual background in the subject.
