Salient features of the book

i) A lot solved problems are provided in the main text and the concluding chapter 15 entitled, ” Miscellaneous Problems ” . The pattern of the problems is quite in keeping with the material of the text as well as the types of questions set the University and the various competitive examination. Problems along with hints and answers have been added to each chapter. Moreover, there are  multiple choice questions given at the end of a few specific chapters. Students are instructed to attempt these problems to sharpen their understanding about the topics discussed in the text.

ii) Some of the topics discussed in the text are not strictly included in the undergraduate syllabus. These have been retained here to give a more comprehensive description of the materials. The chapter 10 containing the topics beyond the prescribed syllabus has been included to give a unified picture of continuum mechanics of which the chapter 11 discussing fluid mechanics forms a part. The inquisitive students are expected to benefit from these discussion while the disinterested ones may skip these parts. A list of references has been given at the end to encourage further study.
